If you’re working on homes, schools or day care centers built pre-1978, you now must be EPA Lead-Safe Certified. Read about how to comply with EPA's rule in the EPA Small Entity Compliance Guide to Renovate Right (PDF) | en español (PDF).
In our continuing effort to be a resource to all those involved with the RRP Rule, we have come up with a centralized location for all your recordkeeping needs. Contractors doing work on pre-1978 housing should be documenting every step of the process with as much attention to detail as possible, because it is that documentation that will protect you from future fines and liability. The more you document to demonstrate that you performed the work correctly, the more evidence you have to defend yourself against any future audits.
You should save a copy of this packet for every job you do for at least 3 years and also hand a copy of it to the owner of the job site within 30 days of the completion of the renovation, or when the final invoice for the job is delivered, whichever is earlier.
Remember that while on the job site there is additional documentation that you must keep on hand as well. You should have a copy of the Certified Firm and Certified Renovator who is working the job. You should also bring a copy of the Renovate Right Pamphlet to give to the owner, and any other document regarding the job that is signed and dated by either the owner or residents of the building.

Safety & Health
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed new guidance, "Nail Gun Safety - A Guide for Construction Contractors," to help construction employers and workers prevent work-related nail gun injuries.
The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has launched a Twitter site as its newest “social networking” feature. It also has consolidated its YouTube videos into one easy-to-use listing.
Links to both L&I’s Twitter and YouTube sites are available on the agency’s Web site at www.Lni.wa.gov.
L&I’s Twitter is a Web-based micro-blogging site with a range of information about such things as workers’ compensation, workplace safety and health, H1N1 flu and more. Some “tweets” on the site link to informative articles published in magazines and newspapers. Go to www.Lni.wa.gov/main/contactinfo/twitter/ for more information.
L&I also shares information through 27 listservs that provide information important to specific groups of people. These listservs can be viewed at www.Lni.wa.gov/Main/Listservs/.
Note: Due to cost factors, seminars and classes that the SHBA offers may have to be canceled if there is not adequate participation from the membership. Please register at least two weeks prior to the scheduled course date.
In the event that minimum attendance is not reached, the SHBA reserves the right to cancel any training up to one week prior. All attendees will be be contacted directly by either BIAW or SHBA if a training course is cancelled.
