Jim Norman

Norman Construction

Jim Norman was born in Yakima an d moved to Spokane in 1961.He started painting houses and doing fencing and lands caping while attending Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University. Jim painted all of the food shacks and vendor huts in Expo ’74, also painted many new homes and commercial projects around Spokane.

Jim established Norman Construction in November 1974. Early y ears were spent doing a mix of framing and trimming out new houses and remodeling existing homes. By 1978 he specialized solely in residential and commercial remodeling.

Jim became a member of Spokane Home Builders Association in September 1990. Shortly thereafter in November, he was asked to help start the Remodelers’ Council. Jim became chairman of the Council from 1991 to 1994. He received the award for SHBA Remodel er of the Year in 1991, 1993 and 1995.

Jim, his wife Melinda and Production Manager Bill Reilly became the first three Certified Graduate Remodelers in Spokane. From 1993 to 1995 Jim worked on the CGR Curriculum
Development Working Group at NAHB. He was appointed to the CGR Board of Governors from 1995 to 2000. As CGR Governors, Clai Porter and Jim developed the CGR Associate program that was introduced in Chicago in 1996. In April 1996 Jim was awarded the NAHB National Remodeler of the Month.

In 1998 Jim had the privilege of serving as SHBA president. As president he initiated the SHBA website and installed the SHBA reader board and sign.At the Building Industry Association of Washington, Jim served as 1998 BIAW National Director and on the Executive Committee.

Bill Main Sr.

Bill was born on June 13, 1928 in Camas, Washington to William and Irma Main. He was raised primarily in Portland and on the Oregon Coast. In his junior high school year his father, an engineer working at Grand
Coulee Dam, moved the family to a cattle ranch in Okanogan County . It was there that the Omak High football player met and fell in love with cheerleader, Norma Medford. Norma was the absolute love of Bill’s life and they were married for 62 years.

Bill joined the United States Marine Corps after high school
graduation and when his stint was completed, Bill and Norma together attended EWU, earning their education degrees prior to marrying on September 16, 1950.

They both obtained jobs in the same Oregon school district. After a brief career in education, Bill and Norma, moved to Spokane, with Bill beginning his business career and Norma raising their three children.

Bill began his real estate career in the 1950s and founde d Main Realty in 1959. Over the ne xt 40 years, he expanded the Real Estate Brokerage to, at one point, over 150 brokers, developed thousands of building lots and built hundreds of homes from Libby, Montana to Sandpoint/Schweitzer, Idaho, Liberty Lake and Spokane Metro including Suncrest, Hangman Hills, Shilo Hills and several others. Real Estate was his passion and his
biggest joy was working with the people that were attracted to the business – who tended to be self-starting, self-reliant and in dependent. Bill’s enthusiasm would recruit people to the business and he would mentor them through the learning stages. His hallmark/reputation was honesty and integrity.

Each year, the Spokane Home Builders Association honors a member or members whose leadership and vision have impacted the local housing industry and SHBA.
