EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION IN GOVERNMENT

Promoting productive housing policy that grows your business and our community

SHBA Government Affairs represents Association members at all levels of government. Staff and members monitor, testify and report on issues including impact fees, environmental policies, land use and a multitude of other issues impacting the residential construction industry.

2018 SHBA General Election Endorsements

Each year the Spokane Home Builders Association identifies and evaluates candidates for office that represent the values and principals of the local building industry. Endorsed candidates support public policy that protects the American dream of home ownership and encourages a wide variety of attainable housing options in our community. SHBA’s endorsement process includes a written questionnaire, candidate background screening and in-person interview with SHBA members.

SHBA PAC

Supports our endorsed candidates and ballot measures that grow the building industry.

LOCAL ADVOCACY

The Spokane Home Builders Association supports policies that promote a diverse and affordable housing supply and encourages homeownership.

SHBA ADVOCACY BELIEVES:

Development Regulations/Codes:

SHBA supports the adoption of uniform development regulations and codes between Spokane regional jurisdictions to provide predictability and certainty.

Good Governance:

Uphold transparency and accountability amongst our elected officials and government staff. Support fiscally responsible government spending that supports future growth and community building.

Growth Management:

Support private property rights and the development of urban growth areas based on objective data that takes the availability of buildable land into account. Artificial restrictions and regulations on growth increase construction costs and raise barriers to housing attainability.

Political Action Center

The SHBA Political Action Committee (PAC) exists to encourage member participation in local elections and support pro-housing candidates for elected office that best represent the positions of our Association.

Members are encouraged to take an active role in their Association’s Political Action Committee including:

  • Making a financial contribution to support
endorsed candidates
  • Vote in every election and encourage their employees
to do the same
  • Participate in the SHBA PAC candidate endorsement interviews each May and June
  • Volunteer their time for endorsed candidates’ campaigns

SHBA PAC has a successful track record supporting key policymakers in our region, including electing pro-growth county commissioners, mayors and city council members and opposing anti-business ballot initiatives.

How Does SHBA PAC Work?

SHBA PAC works to identify and support the candidates for elected office that best represent the values of the Spokane Home Builders Association. To gain the endorsement of SHBA PAC, a candidate must

  • Submit a written questionnaire on their understanding and positions on issues critical to the building industry
  • Complete a civil and criminal background check provided by the nonpartisan Candidate Verification service
  • Interview with an endorsement interview panel of SHBA members
  • Receive a recommendation from the endorsement interview panel and approval of the SHBA Board of Directors

WHAT OUR MEMBERS SAY.

The Remodelers Council has given me tremendous opportunity for leadership and networking with members. I have completed the CAPS [Certified Aging-in-place Specialist] and CGR [Certified Graduate Remodeler]. These educational opportunities which have been beneficial to our remodeling business. Each month, as I participate in the meetings, I continually learn about new products and how they can benefit our customers and our business.

Bob Wright, CAPS, CGRWright Brothers Sunroom & Remodeling Specialists

The ability to meet and engage with individuals with similar goals and who face the same challenges that I do is the primary reason I am so active in the association. As a member of the SHBA I have not only built business partnerships but personal friendships that have given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had.

Nick Scheel, CGR, SHBA Past PresidentArrow Kitchen and Bath

I have found that Government Affairs and Advocacy is like the crystal ball for my business. It lets me know what challenges are coming and gives me the voice to promote effective change.
